New units of competency for the fire protection industry

A project is underway to develop learning and assessment resources to support new and revised units of competency that describe the use of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and synthetic greenhouse gases (SGG) in the fire protection industry.

With funding from the the Australian Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, the Fire Protection Association Australia and the Construction and Property Services Industry Skills Council are undertaking the development of the resources which will match the following six licences contained in Table 322 of the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Regulations 1995 (Regulations):

  • portable fire extinguisher maintenance
  • fixed system installation and decommissioning
  • fixed system testing and maintenance
  • recovery, reclamation, fill and recycling
  • warehouse maintenance
  • control systems installation, commissioning and decommissioning.

Controls relating specifically to the fire protection industry are described in Division 6A.4 of the Regulations.

The Regulations make it an offence to handle ODS and SGG extinguishing agents without an appropriate licence. They also make it an offence to trade in these agents or to possess halon without the appropriate approvals.
